What does business fear most about Climate Change? Hunger and Pollution! Top businesses rank their concerns in exclusive poll Tuesday, 10 July 2007: To gauge what the Australian business world thinks about climate change, Business Climate International recently conducted an extensive survey of some of the country’s top CEO’s across hundreds of large, medium and small businesses. Surprisingly, results show that business leaders are overwhelmingly concerned (85.82%) and a third (33.33%) believe that hunger is likely to be the biggest by- product of climate change, while almost half (42.86%) agree that pollution is indeed the main cause. The survey found that almost a quarter of polled recipients (21.43%) identify increasing populations as a contributing factor, whilst 14.29% believe waste adds to the problem. Erratic weather conditions (28.57%), desertification (14.29%), drought (14.29%) and flooding (9.52%) were also listed as resultant fears. Interestingly, the majority of business executives (85.71%) say they would not single out one nation as the cause of climate change. Of the 14.29% who did, each points the finger at USA. To alleviate the problem, 76.92% of respondents say companies, as opposed to individuals (23.08%), face the major responsibility and challenge. When asked what they personally intend to do about the problem, only a third of the CEO’s say they plan on buying a smaller, more fuel efficient car. Nearly 20% of respondents say they currently conserve water usage. Recycling waste (17.31%), saving power (17.31%), reducing the use of packaging (15.38%), buying energy efficient devices (15.38%) and green products (11.54%) follow. Over half (52.77%) of recipients have watched Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth”. ................................................................................................................ The survey was conducted on Business Climate International’s website (www.businessclimate.com.au) over early July. Editor of Business Climate International Sandy Kaye says, “The results are quite encouraging in that they show company bosses all over the country already in top gear considering complex issues and their solutions”.
