Whether you represent a company, a community or government, a new innovation from a small engineering consultancy in Western Australia is presenting energy efficiency opportunities never before accessible. E2M®, a scientifically advanced energy and emission reduction service, was launched in November at the 20th World Energy Congress by Timothy Edwards, founder and managing director of engineering consultancy Metro Power Company. “It was easy to see the limitations of traditional energy efficiency practices during my years as an engineer and manager for resource giants. The ‘old school’ approaches to energy reduction management are top-heavy with engineering expensive upgrades and ‘dumb’ monitoring. They often have little weighting on behavioural change and converting their monitored data into useful business intelligence. Site operations staff are ‘too busy’ with competing priorities, so it’s easier for them to let third parties arrange capital projects they don’t need to get involved with.” says Edwards. “In the past, if a Board actually approved a capital budget for the energy efficiency improvements, there would a delay of at least several months before they got underway. Things are changing. Climate change has emerged as an immediate issue, with the corporate boards rushing to get their house in order. It takes more than calculating your carbon footprint, corporate image control, and calculating the cost of carbon offsets if you intend to be a sustainable organisation. If they think they are in a position to ‘man-up’ for compliance after sleeping on climate change so long, they have some hard work ahead” warns Edwards. The core of E2M® is driven by artificial intelligence, specifically for complex statistics tasking. E2M® energy managers use it to easily define the organic effects of human behaviour and environmental conditions, with the scientific effects of engineering hardware efficiency and thermodynamics against energy use. It’s then used to optimise energy consumption, costs and emissions for the production activity. E2M® uses the same sample database within a sophisticated statistical forecasting model to accurately forecast energy volumes to trade for renewable or lowemission energy as substitute for the Client’s traditional high-emission energy supplies. “E2M is so far ahead of the global thinking on energy efficiency and supply, it’s a new paradigm. Some of the old-school energy efficiency traditionalists struggle with our concepts initially; then you see the expression on their face change when it sinks in. Our launch in Europe was aimed to penetrate into the mature energy-efficient heavy industrial sector of the EEC on the back of successful trials within Australia. The repeatability of our adaptive statistical methods with proven technology backbones should see the entire E2M service quality-assured early next year. Now we are gearing up for rapid growth as the end-users are starting to realise their potential to reach zeroemissions using E2M.” “It’s a no fuss solution. Our technology is wireless and simply plugs into the site meters and instruments. We’re on site for the audit, understandably, but that’s where we build relationships and understand the drivers behind the organisation…not just how the machines work. Therein, we’re out of their hair. The data is sent to our statistics engine wirelessly, and the dedicated E2M energy manager operates from our office. We make sure their organisation is running as energy-efficiently and cleanly as possible while verifying their bills, emissions, regulatory compliance and coordinating their supply. Easy” remarks Edwards. E2M® is provided on a 24 month subscription basis within the Australasian region. E2M® is open to Expressions of Interest internationally.
