Top Climate Change experts praise Europe; decry Australia as being too slow at Business Climate International conference

Wednesday, June 18: Five authoritative speakers on Climate Change came together this week to discuss the issues of sustainability and what Australian companies are doing at Business Climate International’s (BCI) second seminar.

The topic of discussion for the five-member luncheon panel was Companies and inventions that are really making a difference.

Panel members included:

- Barry Maranta, CEO, SKYShades;

- Oliver Yates, Global Head – Climate Change Practice, Macquarie Group;

- Matthew Warren, Environmental Journalist, The Australian;

- Craig Roussac, General Manager - Sustainability, Safety and Environment, Investa Property Group; and

- Shauna Coffey, Group Sustainability Manager, MIRVAC

Highlights of the 50 minute discussion included the experts agreeing that the Australian Government must learn from Europe when establishing a regulatory framework for Climate Change practices, and to keep it simple.

“Australia is ahead of the tortoise being the United States,” Yates said. “But in relation to Europe, Europe is miles ahead of us…they have been through what we are going through over the last five to 10 years already.”

On the upside, Maranta said Australia was “way ahead” of America. “Nothing really happens over there rather than talk,” he said. “They bring something to congress and nothing ever happens. It’s a very frustrating economy to be part of. You wouldn’t look to Washington to solve any of your problems. They really do have some difficulties.”

Warren said the Australian Government should take a slow and steady approach.

“There are so many risks in going fast and getting this wrong,” he said. “If they take six months longer than they promised or they change a policy that they realise doesn’t work, they should be encouraged to do so to make sure they get this right.”

During the seminar Maranta unveiled and demonstrated SKYShades’ building integrated OPV technology, the first time it has been seen anywhere in the world outside a laboratory.
