Australia on track to meet Kyoto target PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 17 May 2007

kyoto_bg.jpgFigures released this month show that Australia has steadied emissions growth and is on track to meet its Kyoto target.

According to the Minister for Environment and Water Resources, The National Greenhouse Accounts show there had been no growth in emissions between 2004 and 2005. Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2005 were 559 million tones which is 102% above 1990 levels – the same level as in 2004.

The Minister says “Australia is committed to meeting its Kyoto target of 108% of 1990 levels and the latest figures show that we are on course to do that.”

Mr. Turnbull admits that while Australia’s rich resource assets and unique energy-intensive industries means the country’s domestic emissions intensity is much greater than other countries, Australia represents just one and a half percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. The Government is investing significantly in measures to address climate change including through the $500 million Low Emissions Technology Demonstration Fund. To date the program has supported projects to the value of $410 million which has in turn leveraged a further $3 billion in private sector investment.

The Government has also invested in renewable energy through initiatives such as the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target which will underpin more than $3 billion in renewable energy investment, and increase renewable energy generation by more than 50 per cent.

With a strategy to focus on practical solutions that will bring emissions down in the short term, for example through phasing out incandescent light bulbs over the next three years and the $200 million Global Initiative on Forests and Climate which will help stimulate global action to reduce deforestation, an activity that produces emissions second only to burning fossil fuels to produce electricity.

The Government says it will continue to push for a future global response to climate change that includes all the major emitters and provides for effective and flexible pathways to substantial emissions reductions that suit the circumstances of particular nations.
